When it comes to being comfortable, it all starts with us being comfortable with us. We hear the word authentic so much now-a-days that it has lost its significance. But making our home comfortable always starts with ourselves being comfortable inside. When we are home and can let down our defenses, we can relax, be easeful, be peaceful. In that ease and safety, we can be ourselves and create a home that totally reflects our unique authenticity.
Reflecting that authenticity tangibly in our home is the only way to truly make us comfortable at home. Otherwise it’s always someone else’s vision, another’s style or a designer’s concept. It may be beautiful, photo-worthy and design-perfect, but it never translates into comfortable unless it reflects us.
Translating our heart, our values, our history and our spirit into a home is the essence of comfort. When we surround ourselves with beautiful memories, meaningful family antiques, spiritual objects and inspiration, we curate a history and a space that holds the energy and power that is us. The picture that our five-year old drew might be in a $500 frame and hang in a prominent place. The pictures from our trip to Yosemite might line the hallway. The shawl we fell in love with from a street fair we went to when we were dating might drape the back of the overstuffed chair in our bedroom. Grandmother’s nightstand has a few chips on it but the patina shines brightly as the morning sun enters our bedroom. It all feels so comfortable. Maybe it’s not perfectly designed, not perfectly matching, but oh how it warms the heart and makes us feel at ease.
Is there a room in our house that is painted in our favorite color? Is there a place where we can do what’s meaningful to us; art, music, crafts, carving, writing? Are there fabrics that excite us? Is there a wallpaper that make us weak when we see it? Are there textures that we want to wrap around us and make us feel safe? Do rooms invite us in? Is there a space that we go to contemplate, meditate and rejuvenate ourselves? Can we make our whole house feel that way; happy and safe and comfortable?
