When my children were young we had a Saturday tradition of driving to the garden nurseries and spending some time with the flowers, vines and plants. At our favorite garden store there were two cats that wandered the isles and greeted visitors. My kids would always talk about visiting Poppy and Gardenia when we made pancakes for breakfast every Saturday morning.
We would buy one or two small flowers and when we returned home they were installed in their new home to be nurtured and appreciated. Of course, the kids were more fascinated by the worm they discovered in the soil or the grasshopper that was seeking its dinner. It all seemed so natural and right and simple. We enjoyed time together, discovered beauty and explored life.
Then came soccer practice and school functions and boyfriends and girlfriends. The Saturdays at the garden nursery fell by the wayside. But even today I still spend time wandering the paths at my local garden center and remember those sweet times. Still, today there is so much to enjoy, so many new and amazing gifts from nature to discover and planting experiments to carry out. The garden nursery holds a very special place in my heart as it continues to create ever-new memories.
