Sometimes our lives become so consistently busy that we become accustomed and habituated to the constant activity, the incessant input and the never-ending thoughts. When we get the chance to unwind and really settle down, it might feel strange or even uncomfortable to be in silence. Yet, it is in these times of stillness that we have the opening to become present and discover ourselves. In that stillness, we find peace.
In Stillness, we find Peace
There are those of us who have chosen to live with nature in this stillness. What we discover is there is a power, a strength and a wholeness in this silence. There is also great discovery, because when we are left without all the chatter inside and the noise outside, what is left is ‘us’; the true ‘us’ without the adjectives and adverbs that describe the outer us and all we do.
It is rare to really get away – far, far away. Even when we take a vacation or go camping or go on retreat, there are others around and lots to do. There are restaurants and games and adventures. Most of us are moderately social and enjoy the company of others. We like to have fun. But there is an intriguing revelation that occurs when we experience stillness. When we connect to that part of us that is always covered over by the voices in our heads and the activity that surrounds us, we are given a golden chance to find ourselves and realize our worth. We can connect to the essence of life and experience true rejuvenation and restoration.
