Farmhouses are the essence of practicality, simplicity and beauty. They are sheathed in clapboards or board and batten that both protects us from the wind, rain and sun and holds us in the embrace of the craftsmen and women who offered their expertise and skill to create such an enchanting place to dwell. Occasionally a pair of corbels, some beadboard and a pediment over-rides the natural simplicity and displays the detail that makes the place even more special.
These are homes made from nature’s hardware store; the wood floors, the simple lines, the exposed beams. They feel true, authentic and of the earth. They were created for a family who tilled the earth for their food and dug a well for their water. The place they lived had to be functional, sturdy and safe. It just so happened that all that added up to heart, beauty and home.
There’s the Dutch door that keeps the breeze flowing and the animals outside. There’s the gabled roof that allows the rain to be captured while maintaining ease of building. And then there’s the rock or brick fireplace that serves to warm everyone who gathers around it while cooking the food that sustains a family drawn together for the simple purpose of living a beautiful life.
